DeepaMehta is a long-term effort of a highly visionary nature. As such, it will never be finished. To be useful nevertheless, DeepaMehta attempts to grow by way of concrete practice applications. DeepaMehta is not an application with a clearly delineated field of deployment but it is an infrastructure, one could also speak of an operating system. There is a clear separation between the infrastructure -- the DeepaMehta core -- and the applications built on top of this infrastructure. The functionality of the infrastructure will be expanded with each concrete application, and then in turn, the more powerful core will allow for new applications. These are two development processes that will mutually wind each other up.
DeepaMehta is very interested to prove its capability and its utility in real application projects. DeepaMehta is not a merely academic project but aims to solve real problems of real people. The most important application which has been in productive use for 2 years (as of July 2006), is the geaographical content management system "Kiezatlas" (www.kiezatlas.de).
DeepaMehta's functionality has many gaps and its usability is amendable. On the other hand, DeepaMehta may be used as a work platform for "real world" problems right away. Currently, users who perceive themselves as "early adopters", will enjoy DeepaMehta the most. Those who want to be around when something innovative is emerging, and who want to participate in this process.
