in german: Ich denke die Quickies sind für ganz neue Nutzer und sollten detaillierte howtos enthalten zu Themen wie "Installation auf versch. Plattformen", "Umdenken soweit notwendig" und "Aufstellen eines Servers"...Vielleicht kann man einfach die Readme aus dem dm-paket umsetzen. Der Hinweis auf den Weblogin ist natürlich stärker hervorzuheben und die first-steps (die ersten screencasts von mir vielleicht) nicht zu vergessen. Verweise zu screencasts, howtos und faq's (welche ich als eigene seite im wiki haben wollen würde) sind sinnvoll denke ich. Fortsetzung folgt...Maddin 23-Sep-2008 10:29 GMT

  • x28de 23-Sep-2008 14:00 GMT "Quickies" und "detailliert" sind m. E. ein Widerspruch. Überall im Web findet man heute Anwendungen, bei denen man schnell etwas zu sehen bekommt. Solange DeepaMehta keine Selbstregistrierung hat oder wenigstens eine Sandbox-User Umgebung, die jede Nacht zurückgesetzt wird, müssen hier zuerst Demos und Screencasts stehen und als nächstes Beispiel-Importmaps. Wenn man nicht in einer halben Stunde etwas zum selber Manipulieren hat auf dem Schirm erwarten kann, klickt man doch höchstens auf "Back".
Danke für deine Meinung dazu. Du hast recht mit dem Widerspruch und ich formulier es gerne um: ich finde, dass Kriterium der halben Stunde sehr gut und bin genau deshalb der Meinung, dass mehr und vor allem besser strukturierter Inhalt nötig ist um das Ziel zu reichen. Also werd ich versuchen...alles auf einen Blick zu gestallten...
  • Jörg Richter 26-Sep-2008 23:38 GMT / Der Zweck der Quickstart-Seite ist so gedacht: In nicht mehr als einer Seite darstellen, wie man schnellstmöglich DeepaMehta startet und Inhalte anlegt. Sozusagen das allerminimalste Substrat aus User Guide (und ggf. README). Das Ziel ist ein schnellstmögliches Erfolgserlebnis. Ich habe heute mit Malte ausführlich darüber diskutiert und das Ergebnis umgesetzt.

    • Die beiden DeepaMehta-Betriebsarten heißen "Use DeepaMehta online" und "Install it on your own machine". Das ist der Sprachgebrauch, der z.B. auf der Website bereits verwendet wird (und wesentlich aussagekräftiger ist als "Get connected" und "Get your own"). Weiterhin sind "Step 1" und "Step 2" hier nicht richtig, da es sich um Optionen handelt.
    • "Installation on platform xy" gehört nicht auf die Quickstart-Seite, denn genau diese information steht im README unter "Brief instruction". Das README liegt dem Download bei und wird auch nur im Falle der lokalen Installation gebraucht.
    • Den Windows Install-Screencast finde ich im Prinzip gut gemacht. Ich habe zum Screencast Verbesserungsvorschläge, und möchte dann überlegen, wo er am besten hinpasst (z.B. auf die Download-Seite, www.deepamehta.de/docs/download.html). Wer hat diesen Screencast erstellt?
    • Der Link auf die How-To-Seite in "For more configuration checkout some How To's" ist nicht hilfreich. Die Konfigurationsoptionen werden im README wesentlich besser beschrieben, und zum README gelangt man über den Link auf die Download-Seite sowieso. Ausdrücke wie "HSQL based Memory" sind zu detailliert und nicht hilfreich für ein Quickstart.
    • Die Abschnitte "Basic Operations" und "Advanced Operations" aus dem Vorschlag sind identisch mit dem derzeitgen Text, sind also keine Vorschläge.

Vorschlag

Step 1: Get connected.

The most easy way to start using DeepaMehta is to use it online. You just need a Java-capable web browser and a DeepaMehta account.

Step 2: Get your own.

The other very easy way to get things started, but more personal is to download our latest release. We'd like to present you detailed HowTo's for installation on the most common platforms. For further information please look into the README.txt in the .zip-File.

Installation on Windows- Platforms

Thats the way:

  1. Extract the .zip-File to your harddrive.
  2. Go into the created folder, which is named 'deepamehta'.
  3. Find the 'run.bat'-file and double-click on it.
  4. Watch the automatic installation process in the shell and wait for the Login-Applet to appear on upper-left corner of your screen.
  5. Type in the username 'root' and press 2 times enter. There is no password set up for the root by default. How to set one is shown in Section 'After the Installation.

Follow the Brief Instructions depending to your operating system but basically find the resp. run file and execute it. A default installation with a HSQL based Memory will be the choice per default. For more configuration checkout some How To`s

Basic Operations

Once logged in the DeepaMehta desktop appears in its own window. You can create topic maps in your personal workspace. Topic maps consist of topics and associations. Both, topics and associations are typed (e.g. Person, Institution, Website, ...)

Create a topic map
Select your personal workspace from the popup menu. Right-Click on the background and choose "Create Topic Map" from the menu. To open the topic map (eye icon) double-click it.
Create a topic
Right-Click the topic map background and choose a type from the "Create"-menu. If there is no suitable type yet, just choose "Topic" to create a generic topic.
Create an association
Alt-click the first topic and drag the mouse to the second topic. On a linux system try also (a combination of) shift-alt or ctrl-alt or the middle mouse button.

To work with DeepaMehta, you need a constant internet connection. To log out just close the DeepaMehta window.

Advanced Operations

Create your own types
First, create a generic topic, name it e.g. "FC Barcelona". Secondly enter "Football Club" in its "Type"-field and press the enter key. This way a new type "Football Club" has been created. This means you can search for football clubs now ("Search") or create further football clubs ("Create").
Collaboration
You can work on topic maps collaborativly by the means of shared workspaces. Once a topic map is published to a shared workspace it is accessible by other workspace members. Someone has published a topic map e.g. about greek myths & gods to the "DeepaMehta" workspace. By default you're a member of the shared workspaces "DeepaMehta" and "Type Builder". You can join further shared workspaces or create your own.
